For decades, feminist activists have used T-shirts to confront a society that denies women their fundamental rights and encourages social justice groups to be more inclusive. Similar to how sharing a feminist or anti-racist meme on Instagram does not substitute the hard work of political organizing and action, there is a limit to the political potency of a T-shirt—it is merely cotton cloth if there is no extra activism behind it.
However, fashion, like social media, may improve exposure, making a political message more accessible, approachable, and generally viewed, pushing itself into the cultural debate.
When it comes to expressing your convictions, having your ideals spelled out on a shirt may do a lot of the talking for you—and spare you from explaining it louder to the ones in the back. We want feminists to be proud that they're feminists.
